SMALL SOLDIERS | War For The Nekron" Proof of Concept- SPACE ELITE CONCEPT ART
Let's talk about their concept art! First things first, I was in charge of Space Elites, so check Xabier's page to learn about Necronites.
Ray Razor had to be a balanced design. I tried several types of character for her, and eventually landed on this fierce cool leader. Once I drew a heavy chest piece, I knew I had to go in that direction
I wanted a cyberpunk look for her, and I also player around with diferent head shapes but there was something about her having a big nose that I liked from the very beginning. The first pic shows the cholor scheme, it gave her a classic 90's feel.
I new I wanted some sort of ninja, but I also wanted a bit of a archer bandit idea. If you look at G that's the medieval version that I ended up turning into a scifi character
Although we never see it, at some point we player around with the idea of giving Saya a face. We discarded the idea when we added 2 extra team members
T.I Tank was originally just a robot tank, a defensive mecha with a big canon. From the first sketches I knew I wanted big shields on the sides.
When we saw our first line up of characters, we felt we needed to see more human faces, so we made T.I Tank a human with a robotic body.
The demoman had quite a story. It was originally a big guy inspired on mongolian traditional outfits.
However, when our line up went from 5 to 7, we splitted the Demoman in two, Pyro and Demoman, and we gave the bug guy appearance to the Pyro.
After deciding to have 7 characters, we wanted Pyro to be our action figure guy. So we made him big and muscular. We loved the idea of him being so crazy that he wouldn't even cover himself. Afterwards we added the cannister and the Flamethrower.
For the engineer I made so many variations until I landed into something chaotic, half robotic but not enough that it looked like it was yet another robot like the Ninja and the Tank.
The robotic arms gave him quite a crazy and clunky appearance. In the end we changed colors from this to make the arms more visible and have less overall green on the whole character.
Berta the Gunslinger was the second addition when we went from 5 to 7 team members. We played around with the idea of making her male, but we saw having her be female was in fact the right choice.
As an extra, here we take a look into the past of Ray and her brother Caden, that would later become her enemy, Khadenn.
This is the original 10 character line up. From here we gathered that the Space Elites needed more human appearance and we needed to see more of their crazy faces.
[DISCLAIMER: Small Soldiers War for the Nekron is a Proof of Concept project in which our team was hired by Comadran Studios to create a set of toy characters during some months from 2022-2023. The conclussion of the project was the Proof of Concept trailer that brought those new characters to life. We would like to clarify that our team does not own these characters and we do not know what comes next for them after the this Proof of Concept. Designs and story might not represent the final product as they are subject to change during production.]

Concept art of the Space Elite taskforce! These are the drawings that made the rest possible. Check the Nekronite team in Xabi's page!
Since we were our on directors, and in many cases, modellers in this project, we decided to do loose concept art that we understood, enough to convey ideas without getting lost in unnecesary details. A lot of the concept and designing was done during modelling aswell, since we needed to see how things worked as toys, and how those toys fit together.
Making these was a lot of fun, and seing them come to life in the trailer is great.
Please check their own posts to see how each of them ended up looking!
